Polyglycolic Acid-Caprolactone Suture Material Serafit®Protect
DESCRIPTION
SERAFIT® PROTECT is a braided, synthetic, absorbable, sterile surgical suture material. It contains chlorhexidine, a broad-spectrum antiseptic, as a component of the coating.
SERAFIT® PROTECT is degraded by hydrolysis in tissues to form glycolic acid, which is then metabolized in the body. This absorption becomes manifest firstly as a reduction in tensile strength and later as a loss of mass of the thread. The breaking load falls to 60–70% of its initial value after 14 days and to 25–45% of its initial value after 21 days. Degradation is complete after 60 to 90 days. In vitro and in vivo studies with SERAFIT® PROTECT have demonstrated that colonization of the suture material with Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis incl. the MRSA and MRSE variants is prevented or reduced. The clinical efficacy of this property has not been demonstrated.
